![]() Spruce Railroad Trail This 4-mile hike along the northern shore of Lake Crescent is a trail rich in both beauty and history. The story of the trail begins with World War I, when the United States and its allies needed spruce, considered the best wood at the time for building airplane frames. In order to transport the logs to a mill in Port Angeles, a railroad had to be built around the lake since there were no roads. Finished in less than five months, the 36-mile railroad forged through thick forests and blasted through solid rock to accommodate the two tunnels that were built along the route. Mountain bike enthusiasts can also take advantage of the relatively flat four-mile trail. The Spruce Railroad Trail offers hikers of all abilities the chance to see spectacular scenery along the shores of one of the Pacific Northwest's most beautiful and pristine lakes.
